THE NOTECKA FOREST

The Notecka Forest is a huge forest area of about 150 thousand ha on the Lubusz Land. The terrain is covered with dunes with an average height of about 20 m, often exceeding even 30 m, and especially Wielka Sowia (42 m of relative height and 93 m above the sea level). On the borders of the Forest there are numerous ribbon lakes making up the diversity of sandy valleys and hills in the Forest’s centre.

The stand of the Notecka Forest is mainly formed by pines with a slight addition of birches. The majority of them were artificially planted, on a large scale beginning in the second half of the 19th century after the invasion of the Pine Beauty moth, which devastated the Forest between 1922 and 1924.

Moreover, the forest is famous for its fungi; there are Boletus, Leccinum, Suillus, Tricholoma equestre and Chanterelle species. The fauna is not very developed due to often dried areas lacking undergrowth. That is why apart from the most characteristic animal in the region – a deer, only the bird world is rich in varied species – and mainly on the borders and around the lakes.

There are 10 reserves in the Notecka Forest:

  • a bird sanctuary Czaplisko,
  • a nature reserve Lubiatowskie Uroczyska in Drezdenko Municipality, including:
  • a bird sanctuary Czaplenice,
  • a bird sanctuary Labedziniec.
