The first and most important move of the foundry that made its activity more ecological was a change of the production profile. After 1999 the production of gray iron was halted giving priority to ductile iron production, which had consequently brought a change of cast iron melting technology. Gas furnaces were replaced by three modern electric ones – induction furnaces. That move let the total elimination of CO2 production.
Next steps to decrease a nuisance of the foundry were as follows:
- limitation of noise emission – to this end some sound-absorbing screens were placed around the plant
- water protection by sewage purification in a purification plant
- diminishing of dusting coming from mass production and mold crumbling by using filters and partial utilization of waste for the second mass processing.
Currently, the company is seeking for further opportunities to modernize its production, inter alia through successive replacement of devices and production machines. In 2009 the Victaulic foundry applied for a European Union subsidy within the framework of the “Innovative Economy” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 period. The total value of the project amounts to about 25 million zloty, half of which is to be covered from the subsidy. The investment activities will be channeled into solutions guaranteeing better molding mass quality, which will allow the process to be encapsulated and the dust to be re-used. For the environment protection it will mean the maximal dusting decrease, and consequently it will almost completely limit dusting emissions to the environment and the quality of production work conditions will be higher.
The actions taken until now as well as planned investments have caused that the Victaulic foundry in Drezdenko is an environment-friendly plant.
